ReAmp Box
Several
years ago, I had the opportunity to record one of the best
drum performances I have ever heard in a studio. We used a
pretty standard microphone configuration for popular rock
recording. The drummer and other band members loved the sound
during the tracking sessions. All was good until we did the
guitar overdubs and the vocals.
The snare drum sound just didn’t fit anymore and the
cymbal bleed prevented me from fixing it. I had to learn 'some
trick' to fix this in a hurry, and reamping the snare fit
the bill. After doing a little research, I found that most
engineers put a snare drum in front of a guitar cabinet, mic
it, and send the snare signal to the guitar amp. For the most
part, it worked.
Over
the years I've tried reamping in many different ways, but
was never really happy with the physical chain of equipment
or the randomness of the setup. Recently, I was faced with
creating a drum sound for several of the hard rock bands that
I produce and decided it was time to make my life easier.
Using what I learned from 13 years of working for a high-end
speaker manufacturer, I designed a speaker box specifically
geared toward interfacing with a snare drum. This became the
Snare ReAmp Box by e.dagener productions.
Feature list:
• High output 10 inch
woofer (not a guitar speaker)
Power
handling: 150 watts RMS/210 watts max
Voice coil diameter: 1-3/4"
Nominal impedance: 8 ohms
Frequency response: 60-6,000 Hz
Magnet weight: 44 oz.
Fs: 73 Hz
SPL: 98 dB 1W/1m
• Speaker is serviceable
through removable cabinet back
• MDF speaker cabinet
- sealed design
• Low depth cabinet
(to reduce very low-frequency output)
• Cabinet is not internally
braced due to short depth of cabinet. Hardwood is used to
reinforce the corners.
• Groove cut in cabinet
face to accept 13” and 14” snare drums
• Gasket in groove to
provide a seal between cabinet and snare drum rim (This is
essential for a more efficient transfer of energy to the drum
head.)
• Jack plate on side
of cabinet with 1/4” input jack
• Carrying handle (It's
got a handle, it must be portable.)
•
Recessed mesh speaker grill to protect driver
•
Current cabinet finish is heavy duty black sand (textured) finish
